Dick Holness

Co-author of East Coast Pilot

Dick Holness is co-author, with Garth Cooper, of East Coast Pilot.  He began sailing at Herne Bay Sailing Club at the age of 12 and was soon bitten by the dinghy racing bug which occupied him for the next 40 years.

He turned to cruising late in life and now has a 36’ shoal-draught Moody tucked away in a mud berth at Conyer in Kent. He started writing late in life, too, and was recruited by John Goode at Sailing Today magazine before being headhunted on to the East Coast Pilot project.

He adores quiet muddy creeks and swatchways, and enjoys finding short cuts. His proper job was in IT so also he ‘got lumbered’, as he puts it, with the East Coast Pilot website, which is a companion to the pilot guide with regular updates and the latest news for sailing in the area.

He and Garth are very much part of the Imray 'family', leading a team sailing day on the east coast which has become a highlight on the annual calendar.

Listen to Dick and Garth talking about the area on the Imray podcast.
